3D wheel geometry versus optical geometry
The difference between ordinary optical geometry and 3D geometry is so significant that no one contradicts it today. Basically, it is a matter of an order of magnitude different quality and accuracy of measurement and, depending on that, also the geometry setting. The optical geometry was sufficient for vehicles conceptually significantly older, up to a maximum of 2000. Since then, modern cars are equipped with increasingly complicated axles with many atypical functions and the optimal adjustment of their chassis is often very difficult.
What is geometry action?
The geometry of the front axle, or even the geometry of the rear axle, is the design setting of the vehicle chassis. In addition to adjusting the convergence of the front axle, which is the most common action when checking the settings of the chassis, we also adjust the tilt of the vertical pin, deflections, rear axle and axle alignment.
The convergence of the wheels must be set in the following cases:
- when the wheels roll unevenly
- after mechanical impact of the chassis (on the curb, larger hole, etc.)
- after chassis repairs

The adjustment of the axle geometry is closely related to the technical condition of the vehicle, especially the chassis, so it is a professional job that cannot be performed without the necessary equipment and knowledge. Unfortunately, cars still drive on Slovak roads, in which the geometry is either not adjusted by anyone or adjusted without the necessary equipment and without practical knowledge.
Where not to perform geometry
Today, virtually all car repair shops offer the setting of convergence or the entire geometry. However, only a fraction of them have the necessary equipment (especially functional 3D geometry, the price of which is still relatively high) and experienced staff who do these tasks on a daily basis and do not have to learn it with each chassis first. In practice, with some services, this is unfortunately done by someone adjusting the geometry from your eye or not adjusting it at all. Or take your car to someone who sets the geometry and has it re-billed. Or he’ll do a polka of repair and tell you to arrange the geometry yourself. In all cases, this is very disadvantageous and impractical for the client.
Geometry is not just the convergence of the wheels
A common myth is that geometry is a setting for the toe-in of the front axle. That’s just part of the overall geometry. In most modern cars, in addition to toe-in, deflections, tilts, rear axle, axle parallelism (axle alignment), vehicle ground clearance, etc. are also increasingly used. It always depends on the type of axle and car model.
